Any Question Concerning English ..... Here you are !! Empty Please correct this exercise for me

Message par Lotfi 23 le Mer 14 Nov 2007, 17:30

Hello everybody : Smile
I want to you to correct this exercise for me :

these formulas are for : agreement, disagreement or indifference ?

I'm for it.
I don't really care.
I'm in favour of it.
It doesn't concern me.
I'm against it.
I'm opposed to it.
I share the same view.
There's no way I can accept that.
I can't argue with that.
I'm certainly with you on that.

And here is my reponse :
Formulas of agreement are :
- I'm for it.
- I share the same view.
- I'm certainly with you on that.
Formulas of disagreement :
- I'm against it.
- I'm opposed to it.
- There's no way I can accept that.
- I can't argue with that.
And those of indifference :
- I don't really care.
- I'm in favour of it.
- It doesn't concern me.

Are there any mistakes ? confused

Pronom relatif 'That' - cours

Everything, anything, nothing

Only, all

Comparez :

The men who/that are working here are scientists.

Si vous supprimez who/that are working here vous avez la phrase : the men are scientists, qui n'a aucun sens donc vous avez ici une proposition indispensable.

The man named Henry, who is working here, is a scientist.

The boy that gave you this book yesterday is my cousin.

The boy who gave you this book yesterday is my cousin.

Les 2 propositions that / who gave you this book yesterday sont indispensables à la phrase.

The red-haired boy , who is laughing, is my cousin.

The girl whom he met last week is very nice. (relative indispensable)

The girl that he met last week is very nice. (relative indispensable)

The girl he met last week is very nice. (relative indispensable)

The old lady, whom you saw yesterday, was a famous actress.(relative non indispensable)

His new computer, which he bought last week, is very expensive.

Exemple: That car over there is mine.

> Pluriel : those

Exemple: Those cars over there are ours.

Ces voitures, là-bas, sont les nôtres.

I've a writing to do :
Use the information in the following flow diagram to describe the stages from the discovery of oil to the sale of petrol in the filing station. (write 150 words and use the Passive)

Locate oil == pump oil through pipeline == store oil in storage tanks == refine oil into different products, including petrol == store petrol in tanks == transport petrol to petrol stations == store petrol in underground tanks == pump petrol into car tanks

Some stuff to reorganise, adopt and adapt:

The stages of how crude oil is naturally made in the earth:

1) Small sea plants such as algae and plankton died and fell to the bottom of shallow seas a very long time ago.

2) The organic remains of these small sea plants were covered up an buried by layers of sediments such as mud and clay that accumulated over them over time at the bottom of shallow seas.

3) Pressure from burial turned these organic remains into kerogen that is found in compacted mud and clays called shales to make oil shales which are oil source rocks.

4) Heat, pressure and time from being deeply buried in the earth under many layers of compacted sediments made into sedimentery rocks eventually cooked and turned the kerogen in some oil shales into crude oil.

5) The crude oil then migrated usually upwards towards the earth's surface through porous and permeable layers of sedimentary rocks until it reached an impermeable rock layer or trap that did not allow it to move any further. Sometimes if it it reached the earth's surface unimpeded, it made surface seeps of crude oil.

6) The crude oil that reached an impermeable rock layer or trap would slowly accumulate in the permeable sedimentary rock layer that was right under or below it such as a sandstone, limestone or dolostone making it an oil sandstone, oil limestone and/or oil dolostone reservoir rock.

7) The crude oil would mostly remain accumulated in its reservoir until it was discovered and brought up to the surface.

Americans knew something of petroleum deposits as early as 1700, but oil rarely entered commerce until 1849 when Samuel M. Kier of Pittsburgh began selling "Kier's Petroleum or Rock Oil, Celebrated for its Wonderful Curative Powers" on a large scale. Meanwhile, other men were taking steps destined to reveal the true value of the oil. James Young of Glasgow, Scotland, began distilling lubricating and illuminating oils from a petroleum spring in Derbyshire, England, in 1847. In Prince Edward Island, Canada, Abram Gessner distilled kerosine from local coal as early as 1846. He patented his process in the United States and sold his rights to the North American Kerosene Gas Light Company of New York, which began commercial manufacture in March 1854. By 1859, the country had between fifty and sixty companies making kerosine from coal, shale, and other carbons. The business grew rapidly, replacing older illuminants such as whale oil and camphine.

Although Kier had begun distilling kerosine from petroleum in 1850, he had made little headway, and the effective pioneer was Col. A. C. Ferris of New York, who obtained most of the output of the Tarentum, Pennsylvania, wells. In 1858 the crude petroleum business of the United States amounted to 1,183 barrels. Then in 1859 E. L. Drake made his momentous oil strike in western Pennsylvania, and the supply of crude oil rapidly grew enormous. By 1860 more than 200 patents had been granted on kerosine lamps, and within years kerosine became the world's principal illuminant. About 1880 the Standard Oil Company perfected a safe kerosine stove. Meanwhile, by-products of kerosine manufacture, such as paraffin, Vaseline, and lubricating oils, had taken an important place in American life.

During the twentieth century, additional uses were found for kerosine—as an ingredient in jet engine fuel, for domestic heating, as a cleaning solvent and insecticide, and, although largely replaced by electricity, for illumination. In 1972 the United States produced approximately 2.3 billion barrels (42 gallons each) of kerosine.

Take the data you need from this and write yours:

"Used oil is a valuable resource when cleaned of its impurities and re-refined..." (Westlawn Civic Association web site, reprinted from the Spring 1998 Civic Association Mailing, obtained via the Internet). There is no doubting the benefits of using recycled oil. As my source goes on to say, several US brands of recycled oil have been "successfully marketed as premium recycled motor oils". (ibid. 1998 Civic Association Mailing) Here, the used, recycled product is made as good as the original. Why then recycle and reuse waste oil? Apart from the economic common sense of making use of an expensive product twice over, there are pressing energy and environmental reasons to recycle and reuse waste oil. Oil - and its fossil fuel derivatives - is a non-renewable resource i.e. once all the crude oil has been pumped from the earth resources will end. There is a need to start using recycled waste oil to supplement fossil fuel stocks. Recycling waste oil and using the end product is efficient and economical, as well as energy saving. It is amazing to realise for example, that it takes 67 gallons of crude oil to produce one gallon of motor oil but only 1.6 gallons of waste oil to make one gallon of motor oil!

There are a range of uses waste oil can be put to in order to conserve energy. Firstly, what is 'waste oil'? 'Waste oil' is oil that has been used for its intended purpose and degraded from its original condition. The main use of recycled oil is as a fuel for heating for example regionally, in brick factories. Recycled oil is blended with virgin stock or re-refined into a usable heating fuel. Recycled oil can also be turned into diesel for use in machinery and vehicles. Diesel is a cheap and energy saying alternative to petrol and other hydrocarbon fuels. Waste oil needs to be of good quality for this recycling process. As mentioned above, recycled oil can also be made into reusable lubricating oil!

Another energy conservation bonus from recycling waste oil is that the actual process of recycling is itself economical, efficient and environmentally friendly. We visited CIC Environmental Services Sdn Bhd in Kuala Belait to get an idea about how waste oil is recycled. Waste oil is pumped through a furnace and heated. This gets rid of water, volatile oils and chemical substances in it. Heavy oil remains after distillation - and this is CIC's main saleable 'product'. Light oil and water are evaporated and accumulated and these go through oil/water separation: the water goes to a biological water treatment plant (where microorganisms are employed to take up unwanted organic matter) and is then discharged - 'clean' - back into the environment. light oil (a by-product of this process) gets fed back into CIC's furnace to heat the whole system. CIC generates its own fuel this way so the process supplies its own energy needs i.e. it is in part self-sufficient. There is enough of this product left over to supply outside companies on a commercial basis. The final bonus of this process is that it is - at every stage ~ environmentally friendly, as well as energy efficient!

In addition to energy saying qualities, use of recycled oil has many other advantages. For example, creation of employment, sharing of technologies and expertise between nations, attraction of foreign investment in local economies, earning sort after export dollars for a country's economy (most of CIC's recycled oil is exported regionally), and helping foster public awareness of energy and environmental conservation issues.

Few of the good things in life are 'free'. This also applies to recycling and using waste oil. Governments, lubricating oil related businesses and consumers have clear responsibilities in fostering conservation of energy through use of recycled oil. World wide, waste oil recycling is a privatised business. Consequently, we will have to pay to have our waste oil recycled if the energy conservation and environmental benefits are to be reaped. This will mean for example that in Brunei, where waste oil management and recycling is still a developing market, user companies will need to pay to have their waste oil removed by recycling companies. A change of thinking with respect to waste management will be called for. Why? In the past companies were often paid for waste materials - like metals - that they wanted removed from their premises. Having to pay waste oil recycling companies like CIC will mean passing this cost on to customers - a difficult choice in the competitive world of car workshops.

As consumers, we also have a part to play. We must accept our responsibility to conserve energy and protect the environment by paying more for the oil we use in our motor vehicles. For the average car workshop, Mr. Lim, Manager at CIC, estimates this cost at between $4 - $5 per oil change: a small price to pay for energy conserved and the environment protected.

For waste oil recycling to be successful, public education is crucial. People need to be persuaded of the energy savings and environmental benefits that come from it. Essay competition such as this, are an excellent model of such education. There should be government legislation concerning the disposal of waste products to encourage and assist recycling companies in their business. Some sort of subsidy for waste oil management might be considered as a way of setting small businesses oft along the road to waste oil recycling. Whatever the outcomes, the key benefits to our community from waste oil recycling and its use, are clear: huge energy savings as well as protection of the environment. If we are to avoid becoming 'fossilised' in the near future, we need to conserve energy - and the environment - now, by recycling and reusing fossil fuel, namely 'oil'.

Waiting to correct you.

thank u Mr!! this is my essai ,

Before that we can use it as fuel, petrol is passé by many stages, from the discovery of oil to the sale of petrol in the filing station.
First of all, searchers are located oil, then they use pumpjack to extract it from the deep of earth. And now, it’s the stage to pump oil through pipeline, and then it’s strored it in storage tanks, that make it to factories which specialization refine it into different products, including petrol.then, the petrol is stored in tanks and transpored to petrol stations, where it”s stored in underground tanks, where it can be in a safe place. In that way petrol is approached for people, and pumped in car tanks which is the laste stage of petrol trip from amineral oil to a very important fuel : petrol.
